How this list is ranked
- Universe. S&P 500 companies in the GICS industries Passenger Airlines and Rail Transportation and Air Freight & Logistics and Cargo Ground Transportation and Passenger Ground Transportation, scored from SEC filings with confidence High or Medium.
- Score. The X-Ray score (0 to 100) blends valuation, growth, profitability, financial health and dividends, with each lens ranked within the sector.
- Order. Sorted by X-Ray score; ties go to the higher financial-health score.
- Data. Scores come from company filings with the SEC and our own fair-value models. Every figure is our own calculation, dated 22 Oct 2026.
- Limits. Scores describe the past and the present, not the future. A company with less history gets a lower confidence label. Different rules give a different order, which is why the rules are printed here.
Why a ranking by stated rules and not a "best" label: the order changes with the rules, so the rules are published next to the list. See also how the X-Ray Score works.
What is in this list
"Transportation" here is built from five GICS industries inside the S&P 500: passenger airlines, rail transportation, air freight and logistics, cargo ground transportation (mainly trucking) and passenger ground transportation, which is where ride-hailing platforms sit. That is 13 companies. We chose these because they move people and goods and share exposure to fuel, labour costs and the economic cycle. Car makers and marine shipping are different GICS industries and are not part of the group.
Five businesses, one label
An airline, a railroad and a package-delivery company have very different economics: airlines carry heavy debt and are exposed to fuel prices, railroads are close to monopolies on their routes with large fixed assets, and logistics companies are driven by parcel and freight volumes. The X-Ray score ranks each company against sector peers, and all five industries sit in the same sector, so a railroad and an airline are scored against each other even though their businesses differ. Read the industry shown for each row before comparing two scores.
What the current ranking shows
The leader is United Airlines Holdings, Inc., followed by Uber Technologies, Inc, Delta Air Lines, Inc.. Among the 10 shown, the industries split as: 3 in Passenger Airlines, 3 in Air Freight & Logistics, 2 in Cargo Ground Transportation, 1 in Passenger Ground Transportation, 1 in Rail Transportation. Our fair-value models label 2 undervalued, 7 fair and 1 overvalued. Only 13 companies are ranked, so the list reaches the whole group rather than a selected top.
Questions about these transportation stocks
Why is a ride-hailing company on a transportation list?
GICS classes ride-hailing platforms as passenger ground transportation, which is one of the five industries included. The list follows the classification.
Are shipping companies and car makers included?
No. Marine shipping and automobile manufacturers are separate GICS industries and are not part of this group.
Can I compare an airline with a railroad using these scores?
Only loosely. Each lens is ranked against sector peers, and the businesses have different debt levels and capital needs. Use the score to find candidates and read the industry beside each name.
What usually moves transportation stocks?
Fuel prices, freight and passenger volumes and labour costs, all of which follow the economic cycle. The X-Ray score does not forecast any of them.
