How this list is ranked
- Universe. S&P 500 companies in the GICS industries Semiconductors and Semiconductor Materials & Equipment, scored from SEC filings with confidence High or Medium.
- Score. The X-Ray score (0 to 100) blends valuation, growth, profitability, financial health and dividends, with each lens ranked within the sector.
- Order. Sorted by X-Ray score; ties go to the higher financial-health score.
- Data. Scores come from company filings with the SEC and our own fair-value models. Every figure is our own calculation, dated 22 Oct 2026.
- Limits. Scores describe the past and the present, not the future. A company with less history gets a lower confidence label. Different rules give a different order, which is why the rules are printed here.
Why a ranking by stated rules and not a "best" label: the order changes with the rules, so the rules are published next to the list. See also how the X-Ray Score works.
What is in this list
The universe is every S&P 500 company that S&P Dow Jones Indices places in the GICS industries Semiconductors or Semiconductor Materials & Equipment: 20 companies, covering chip designers, memory makers and the companies that sell the machines and materials used to build chips. The industry labels are S&P's, so a company can sit here for reasons that surprise: a solar-module maker is classed as a semiconductor company because its product is built on semiconductor technology.
Foreign chipmakers that US investors know through American depositary receipts, such as TSMC or ASML, are not S&P 500 members and are therefore not scored or ranked here.
Why the cycle matters more here than elsewhere
Chip demand moves in cycles, and profits swing much more than sales. At a peak, profitability and growth scores look excellent and a valuation based on peak earnings looks cheap, which is exactly when the model is most likely to flatter a company; our method flags cyclical companies at peak margins with High fair-value uncertainty for this reason. Read the fair-value label on each row together with its uncertainty, not on its own.
What the current ranking shows
Of the 20 companies ranked, the leader is Micron Technology Inc, strongest on growth. The top ten span 31 points from first to tenth, a wide spread, so the first few places really do stand apart from the rest. Our fair-value models label 1 of the ten undervalued, 7 fair and 2 overvalued. The median score of all 20 companies is 48. The leader sits far above that median, which says the industry is uneven: a few companies score well on every lens while many do not.
Questions about these semiconductor stocks
Does this list include TSMC or ASML?
No. They are not S&P 500 members, so we do not score them from SEC filings. Only companies in the S&P 500 are ranked on this page.
Is this a list of AI stocks?
No. Exposure to artificial intelligence is not a field in our data. The list ranks S&P 500 chip companies by the X-Ray score; some of them sell into AI demand and some do not.
Why does a solar company appear in a chip list?
Industry labels follow S&P's GICS classification, which places some solar-module makers in the semiconductor industry. The list follows the label rather than overriding it.
How much separates first from tenth?
Today the top ten span 31 points on the X-Ray score. Because the score blends five lenses ranked against sector peers, neighbouring ranks can be very close even when the full spread is wide, so treat ranks that are within a few points of each other as ties and look at the individual lenses.
