ETFs ranked by X-Ray Score

Every stock in our S&P 500 coverage has an X-Ray Score from 0 to 100. This page applies those scores to what each ETF holds: the average score of a fund's stocks, weighted by how much of the fund each one makes up. 208 equity ETFs with at least 70% of their weight in scored stocks are ranked, from 60.2 (VFLO) to 42.1 (VCR); the median is 51.9. The score describes the holdings, not the fund: it ignores cost, tracking and price, which are shown beside it. Scores as of 23 Oct 2026. Educational, not advice.

X-Ray = weighted average X-Ray Score (0 to 100) of the fund's scored stocks. The five lens columns are the same weighted average for each lens. Scored = share of the fund's weight in stocks we score. Cost = expense ratio from SEC filings. 1Y return = total return. Rank 1 = highest score; "in group" ranks a fund against ranked funds of its own group when the group has three or more. Weights are from each fund's latest SEC holdings report.

Groups are assigned by StocksXray rules from the fund name. A group's average describes what its funds hold; it is not a verdict on the group. Groups with a single ranked fund are left out.

How to read the ranking

The score rewards what the X-Ray Score rewards: companies that look cheap on valuation measures, grow faster, earn better margins, carry less debt and pay dividends, each judged against the other companies in its own sector. A fund scores high when the companies it holds do, and a fund that owns the whole market scores close to the middle. That makes the ranking a map of what funds hold, which is useful for comparing, say, two growth funds or two dividend funds, and less useful for choosing between a growth fund and a dividend fund, because the lenses weigh them differently.

Two things to keep next to the score. First, coverage: only stocks in our S&P 500 coverage are scored, so a fund with 75% scored weight is judged on three quarters of its holdings. Second, cost and tracking: two funds on the same index get nearly the same score, so the cost column is where they differ. Sector ETFs are compared on their own page: the 11 US sectors side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What is the look-through X-Ray Score of an ETF?

It is the average X-Ray Score of the stocks an ETF holds, weighted by how much of the fund each stock makes up (the SEC holdings weights). A stock's X-Ray Score combines five lenses scored 0 to 100: valuation 25%, growth 20%, profitability 25%, financial health 20% and dividends 10%. The fund's five lens averages are worked out the same way, so you can see which lens drives a fund's score.

Which ETFs are ranked and which are not?

A fund is ranked when it is an equity fund, at least 70% of its weight is in stocks we score and it holds at least 10 of them. We score the stocks in our S&P 500 coverage, so funds that hold mostly foreign, small-cap or private-market assets fall below that line, as do bond, leveraged, inverse and volatility funds, commodity and crypto funds, and funds that do not file holdings with the SEC (for example SPY and DIA, which are unit investment trusts). Those funds show a score on their own page from 25% coverage but no rank.

Why are the scores so close together?

A diversified fund averages many stocks whose individual scores range widely, so the fund's score settles near the middle. Among the 208 ranked funds the scores run from 42.1 to 60.2 with a median of 51.9. A fund that simply owns the market sits near that median, and a gap of a point or two between two funds is small. Bigger gaps come from funds that deliberately tilt toward one kind of company.

Does a higher X-Ray Score mean a better ETF?

No. The score only describes how the companies in the fund score today on our five lenses. It says nothing about what the fund costs, how closely it tracks its index, how easily it trades, how much tax it creates or what its price will do. That is why cost, coverage and the one-year return are shown beside each score, and why the ranking is a way to sort funds by what they hold, not a recommendation to buy one.

How often is the ranking updated?

The stock scores are refreshed every night and the ranking is rebuilt after that; this page shows scores as of 23 Oct 2026. The holdings weights come from each fund's latest quarterly SEC filing (Form N-PORT), so a fund's weights can be a few months old; the holdings date is on every fund page.

Can I see how a fund's holdings are scored?

Yes. Each fund page has an X-Ray look-through section that shows the share of the fund we score, the split of its holdings into undervalued, fair and overvalued by our fair-value method, and its sector mix. The method behind the stock scores is on the methodology page.
