How this list is ranked
- Universe. S&P 500 companies in the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors, scored from SEC filings with confidence High or Medium.
- Score. The X-Ray score (0 to 100) blends valuation, growth, profitability, financial health and dividends, with each lens ranked within the sector.
- Order. Sorted by X-Ray score; ties go to the higher financial-health score.
- Data. Scores come from company filings with the SEC and our own fair-value models. Every figure is our own calculation, dated 22 Oct 2026.
- Limits. Scores describe the past and the present, not the future. A company with less history gets a lower confidence label. Different rules give a different order, which is why the rules are printed here.
Why a ranking by stated rules and not a "best" label: the order changes with the rules, so the rules are published next to the list. See also how the X-Ray Score works.
Two sectors, two kinds of customer
This list combines the two consumer sectors of the S&P 500. Consumer staples sell what people buy whatever the economy is doing, such as food, drinks, household goods and groceries. Consumer discretionary sells what people can postpone: cars, travel, restaurants, clothing, home improvement. In a slowdown the first group tends to hold up and the second to suffer, and in a recovery the order flips. Because the X-Ray score is ranked within each sector, a staples company and a discretionary company can both score well while being very different investments. For each sector on its own, see the consumer staples and consumer discretionary pages.
What the current ranking shows
The leader is Deckers Outdoor Corp, and the top ten split 7 from discretionary and 3 from staples. Discretionary names lead today, so the list is leaning toward companies that depend on consumers feeling confident. Our fair-value models label 7 of the ten undervalued, 2 fair and 0 overvalued (1 not rated). 73 companies are ranked in total.
Questions about these consumer stocks
Why are staples and discretionary stocks ranked together?
People search for "consumer stocks" without making the distinction, so this page covers both and says how today's ten split. The two sector pages rank each group on its own.
Does a place on this list mean the company is defensive?
No. Staples tend to be defensive; discretionary companies are not. The sector shown for each row tells you which group it is in.
Does the list include retailers and restaurants?
Yes, when S&P classes them in these two sectors: broadline and specialty retailers, restaurants and home-improvement chains are consumer discretionary, and food and drug retailers are consumer staples.
Where are the companies that sell online or through apps?
Online marketplaces are classed as broadline retail, which is consumer discretionary, while social-media and app companies are interactive media in communication services. The sector shown on each stock page tells you where a company sits.
