What this means

Weak business, but the price is low

Our models put fair value above today's price, but models can be wrong, so check the business first. A high score does not guarantee a good outcome; it shifts the odds a little. Use the checklist as a prompt for your own research.

SWOT analysis: MGM Resorts International

Strengthsinside the company
  • Revenue has grown 10.1% a year over three years (median 6.4% for sector peers).
  • Free cash flow equals 19.7% of the market value, which funds dividends, buybacks or debt paydown.
Weaknessesinside the company
  • Return on invested capital is only 3.1% (median 24.9% for sector peers), so the business earns little above its cost of capital.
  • Operating margin of 5.7% is thin against 15.0% for sector peers.
  • Earnings per share have declined 39.8% a year over three years.
  • Net debt is 13.0x EBITDA, above the 3x level that lenders usually watch.
Opportunitiesvaluation and setting
  • The price is 32% below our fair value estimate, with the gap larger than the margin we allow for error.
Threatsvaluation and setting
  • Revenue growth slowed to 1.7% last year from 10.1% a year over three years.
  • Heavy debt makes profits sensitive to interest rates and refinancing conditions.
  • Valuation uncertainty is high: the models give widely different values, so the fair value range is wide.
