About Eversource Energy

Eversource Energy is a regulated utility holding company that delivers electricity, natural gas and water service in several northeastern states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire. It owns the wires and pipes that carry energy to homes and businesses, and does not primarily earn money by producing power. Revenue is set largely by rate cases approved by state regulators, which allow recovery of costs and an authorized return.

A dividend is paid, with a yield of 4.6%. Looking at the numbers, trailing revenue is $14.1 billion, and it expanded at 3.3% a year across three years. Operating margin is 21.4%, while return on invested capital is 5%. Leverage, measured as net debt to EBITDA, is 5.2 times. Taken together, these figures give an X-Ray Score of 65 out of 100.

Net debt = debt minus cash & securities. Source: latest SEC 10-Q/10-K. EBIT / EV yield = operating profit divided by market cap plus net debt.

Average business at a low price

Our models put fair value above today's price, but models can be wrong, so check the business first. A high score does not guarantee a good outcome; it shifts the odds a little. Use the checklist as a prompt for your own research.

These ratings compare companies with each other and describe the past; they are not a forecast, a recommendation or part of the X-Ray Score. A factor is left out when its data is missing or meaningless (for example a P/E on negative earnings). A dash in the history columns means fewer than three usable years.
