Alphabet is the parent company of the search engine and advertising business that most people know by its subsidiary's name. Through that subsidiary it earns most of its money from advertising shown alongside search results and video, and it also provides cloud computing services, mobile operating software, a web browser and consumer hardware such as phones and smart speakers. Its customers range from small advertisers to large enterprises and public organisations. The company is based in Mountain View, California.
