National Grid PLC is an energy utility that owns and operates electricity and gas transmission and distribution networks. In Britain it moves electricity and gas through its networks to homes, businesses and industry, and it runs local distribution systems that connect customers to the grid. It also owns electricity and gas utilities in the northeastern United States, serving customers there. The company is based in London, United Kingdom, and its business centres on the regulated networks that carry energy rather than on generating or selling it.
