Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., known as Petrobras, is a Brazilian energy company controlled by the state. It explores for and produces crude oil and natural gas, largely from deep-water offshore fields, and operates refineries that turn crude into fuels, lubricants and other petroleum products. It sells fuels and related products to distributors, industrial customers and consumers in Brazil and abroad, and it also generates and trades electricity and produces petrochemicals and fertilisers.
